About the District

The Cuyama Basin Water District (CBWD or District) is a California water district formed in 2017 with a primary purpose of operating on behalf of agricultural interests for compliance with the 2014 legislation known as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). The District is one of six member agencies that formed a Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) under the SGMA legislation. This GSA is developing a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) to set a path for achieving the sustainable groundwater management of the Cuyama Valley Groundwater Basin within 20 years underlying the District.

The District encompasses an area of approximately 83,000 acres within Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties, and is located in the Cuyama Valley which lies in the Coastal Range between the Southern San Joaquin Valley and the Central California Coast. The District is generally due east of the City of Santa Maria and southwest of the City of Bakersfield. The Cuyama River runs through the District from the southeast to the northwest along the boundary between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties as it makes its way toward the California Central Coast. State Highway 166 runs east and west through the northern part of the District and State Highway 33 runs north and south along the eastern boundary of the District.
